Background:
Claude Ilusade was the fourth son of an insane yet influential nobleman. The entire Ilsuade clan consisted of cruel, mad, and powerful folk. While Claude was never mistreated by his father or siblings, he grew up aware of their intrigues. He couldn't help but hear the screams of their particular lovers or servants, and he knew that many of these 'favorites' committed suicide. Unfortunately, or fortunately, his own nature differed significantly from the other Illusades. He was diffident and cold to everyone. As he grew older, he placed a wall between himself and the horrors surrounding him. Though he was mocked a bit, his family did care for him, if only because he was part of their bloodline. That, and only that, separated his fate from those victims who adorned the various bedrooms in the house, or who shuffled like living ghosts through the hallways. His cold attitude was partly a result of that inescapable fact.
Appearance and basic information:
Claude is 17 years old, 5'6 tall and skinny. His voice is deep for a person of his stature and husky. When he speaks with others, he holds a cold and rigid posture. While alone, or in company with those he trusts (if anyone), he tends to slump instead. Smiles are rare for this serious young man, aside from the false ones demanded by courtesy. His clothes are all of fine material, simple, and well kept. He wears gloves compulsively and hesitates to touch strangers (or blood family members) unless he must. His expression tends to be a vaguely sad one.
Personality Elements:
Claude is solemn, gentle spoken, and outwardly a peaceable sort of youth. He can seem a bit arrogant or dismissive, or appear to lack empathy for individuals or humankind in general. Really, he's terrified of offering sympathy or showing weakness. His childhood taught him the downfalls of sharing anyone's pain. If he remains apart, he won't be able to receive their suffering, or fall victim to it himself. Yet he doesn't seem cruel in general, just cold. He regards any violent impulses with as much suspicion and fear as the emotion of empathy. Basically, he won't allow them, in order not to become either his family or their victims. He holds himself apart...or tries to.
But, he is very much affected by his upbringing and the terrible memories he carries with him. He feels shame and guilt as if he had committed the violence himself. Curiously, he almost wishes he had, as if being a 'true Ilusade' would lessen his pain somewhat. He fears he is one of them beneath his composure. Indeed, he has both masochistic and sadistic thoughts, which he finds horrifying. Sometimes he wants nothing more to give in to those impulses. He feels that his troubles would be lifted from him if he ever did, but even that thought is an endless source of guilt.
